Friends of the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail, Inc. purchased the Pumpkinvine railroad corridor in 1993 with intentions of constructing a multi-use trail. After many years of litigation, and the donation of 1.75 miles of cooridor to the Goshen Parks Department, the first section of trail opened in March of 2000. Since that year, six more sections of this 17 mile trail have opened. Two gaps remain, but prospects are hopeful for a fully-connected trail within the next several years.
While Friends were working on their original vision for the Trail, Goshen Parks was building the Maple City Greenway and Elkhart County built the MapleHeart Trail. These projects now connect Elkhart, Goshen, Middlebury and Shipshewan accross the county of Elkhart, with about 25 miles of trail, greatly exceeding Friends original dreams in 1993.
These accomplishments do not finish Friends' work. We are currently engaged in the following activities:
Trails are a wonderful asset to our community and they do not happen without public support. Your donations help fund maintenance and development projects along the length of the Trail.
